Can You Use Dimmable LED Bulbs Without a Dimmer Switch?

The short answer to this question is: Yes, you can use dimmable LEDs without a dimmer switch, just like normal lamps. This is handy to know because many retailers are reducing the number of non-dimmable LED bulbs that they stock.

Historically, dimmable LEDs have been much more expensive to manufacture than their non-dimmable counterparts. However, as LED technology has advanced, the difference in the cost to make dimmable versus non-dimmable LEDs has fallen significantly and will continue to do so.

This means that LED retailers can now offer dimmable LED lamps at a comparable price to non-dimmable versions, so holding stock of non-dimmable LEDs is becoming unnecessary.

Why use dimmable LEDs without a dimmer switch?
There are three reasons to use dimmable LEDs without a dimmer switch:

1. Keep your options open
You may not want the hassle of changing your light switches to LED-compatible dimmers yet, but you may in the future. Buying dimmable LEDs now to use without a dimmer switch means that you won't need to purchase dimmable versions in the future if you decide you do want to use a dimmer.

2. More choice
By not limiting yourself to non-dimmable LEDs you increase the number of options you have when purchasing new LED lamps and spotlights.

3. Necessity
Finally, you may not have a choice in the matter! Some types of dimmable LEDs are now so cheap that there is no point in retailers stocking the non-dimmable version.
